This model project retrofits an entire block in Oakland’s Rockridge District. Residents in this older Italian neighborhood, concerned about speeding traffic, contacted Andrews and Chang to help visualize a greener, safer street as a way to allow young children to be able to visit and play at other households without always having adults physically present at the streetside. Through the organizational process, the project has grown in scope to include sustainable practices such bulk solar panel purchasing and installation, greywater systems, and weatherizing as well as stormwater filtering, traffic calming and reducing impervious surfaces.
