Northgate Affordable Family Housing

Oakland, CA

Project Description

Located in a mixed-use neighborhood adjacent to downtown Oakland, this new infill building complex transforms a tour-bus parking lot into 42 units of affordable housing for low- and very low- income families. The street corner at the ground level is anchored by the community room and office serving the resident manager and an on-site services coordinator. At the podium level, the project centers around a courtyard with a tot-lot to encourage resident interaction and community building. There are roof gardens accessible to all residents. Utilizing sustainable practices such as limiting VOCs, incorporation of durable materials, and minimizing occupant energy consumption, etc., this project has become a smart-growth and green building case study for the Green Affordable Housing Coalition and Urban Ecology. Catherine Chang served as project designer at Thomas Dolan Architecture on this building.
